Fellowship & Outreach

At St. Joseph’s, we seek to blend fellowship among our members with outreach to our neighbors on and around Ninth Street, thereby living out our baptismal covenant to “proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ,” and to “seek and serve Christ in all persons.” We share food after Morning Prayer and the Sunday Eucharist, and on special occasions like the Christmas dinner after the Christmas Eve Eucharist. Often, we simply “hang out,” accompanying each other on our various life’s journeys and encouraging each other in our life of Christian faith.

Jesus told his disciples, “You will always have the poor with you,” and this is certainly true at St. Joseph’s. Remembering that he was echoing Deuteronomy, “Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, ‘Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land,’” and that He himself was homeless, we seek to live in fellowship with all who arrive at our church’s door. Homeless persons are members of our community, welcome to rest on our property and to participate in worship, fellowship, and study. To help meet the physical needs of our homeless neighbors, the church accepts donations of money to our “poor plate,” located beside the baptismal font, as well as contributions of clothing, food, and toiletries. We do ask that parishioners not give cash to other persons directly while they’re on church grounds.
