The Mission of Saint Joseph's To follow Jesus Christ as His Disciples through Joyful Worship, Sacred Study, Christian Action, and Community Life, In the Power of the Holy Spirit.
St. Joseph’s is a place of worship, prayer, fellowship and study. We normally pray Morning Prayer at 8:00 a.m., Monday through Friday and Evening Prayer at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please check the weekly schedule for changes this week. After Morning Prayer, church members, visitors and homeless neighbors share breakfast. Please join us for prayer and fellowship whenever you can. The “poor plate” located by the baptismal font funds our fellowship and outreach ministries. Thank you for your gifts!
Vicar’s schedule: Karen is serving as our vicar on a 2/3 time basis. Her normal Sabbath is Monday and her normal “Church days” are Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. In the event of a pastoral emergency, she is always available on her cell phone.
Convocation Confirmation: Wednesday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m. Please come join with us and others around the Durham Convocation as we welcome our brothers and sisters who are being confirmed and received into The Episcopal Church. There will be NO Eucharist or class at St. Joseph’s that evening. If you are interested in confirmation or reception, please see our Vicar, Karen.

Sabbath as Spiritual Practice: Discerning the Spirit in Work and Rest
As you know, Sabbath is a Jewish custom of marking a day of rest each week, one with its own culture of setting aside tasks and objects for a time in order to make space to rest with God. Christians do not practice Sabbath in the same sense, but of course we are tied to the concept through the Ten Commandments, and we see shades of it in the spiritual practices of our religious communities, especially the Benedictines.
For six weeks, on Wednesday evenings beginning May 2 at 7pm, I inviteyou to join together for a discussion of observing Sabbath as a spiritual practice, individually and as a community of faith. We will be invited to set your own Sabbath Rule, to practice it during this time, and to start a discernment about what this might mean for your congregation and the direction God is calling you. The Rev. Canon Cathie Caimano will lead us in our conversations. As we talk about Sabbath, setting aside our "stuff" in order to intentionally listen to God, we will also begin to discern and talk about what our gifts are at St. Joseph's - looking both at our history and our present in order to engage the future. Please mark your calendars to take part in our communal discernment.
Imagine not being able to obtain everyday essentials that most of us take for granted. On the first Sunday of every month we collect simple items such as toilet paper, diapers (sizes 4 and 5) and toiletries (toothpaste and toothbrushes etc.). Please help us make life a little more comfortable for those struggling to provide these basic needs for their families.
Beloved Community Fair and Food Drive for Urban Ministries
From now until May 13th, St. Joseph's will be collecting a variety of nonperishable food items, toiletries, and hygeine items to help restock Urban Ministries' food pantry for the summer. A full list of needed items is available at http://www.umdurham.org/donate/food-pantry-list.html. A basket will be avilable for donations every Sunday at the rear of the church.
